General Paediatrician

Based in the Platinum Province of North West, South Africa, Dr Tumelo Leeuw is a seasoned and passionate Medical Practitioner. Armed with extensive experience amassed from both: private and public sectors, she focuses on sustained wellness for all communities – particularly, those she serves!

As a well-exposed professional, Dr Tumelo Leeuw is a General Paediatrician with a keen interest in Neurodevelopmental Disorders. As a young mother of two, she fully recognises the importance of sound healthcare and early developmental primary and holistic care, irrespective of social standing and class. This ethos is the driving force behind many of her community projects and has seen her consistently ploughing back.

Community Engagements

Her immense community work extends to; imparting valuable skills and techniques as well as, empowering community-based caregivers with minable knowledge. This enables caregivers to provide better care for younger children.

Dr Tumelo Leeuw also volunteers on one of North West’s biggest community radio stations. On this platform, staged once a week since 2017, she provides audiences/community members with world class and relevant medical topics and engages the community live on air, for free. This mode also filters through to her professional Social Media Portals which have all gained a sizable following and further cemented her as a trusted medical voice within the community.

The Patient – The Focal Point

At her private practice, working as a General Paediatrician, Dr Tumelo Leeuw creates a comprehensive, inter-active, accessible and caring paediatric practice that delivers a service which places the child (patient), and their parents/guardians at the core of all operations!

The facility sees her examining all paediatric cases from: 0-17 years and consists of a multi-disciplinary team. They offer comprehensive neurodevelopmental services – from diagnosis, to holistic management and care. In addition, she provides ‘First Aid for Children’, ‘CPR for Everyone and Professionals’ and ‘BLS for Health Care Professionals’ classes for companies, caregivers, and professionals.

Passion Project: Autism

A self-proclaimed “Children’s Disability Activist” Dr Tumelo Leeuw also focuses much of her attention on Autism. To this end, she hosts regular stakeholder engagements (for professionals and the community) to teach, exchange ideas and offer feasible support on all matters Autism related.

She is also serving her second term as Chairperson of Autism South Africa (ASA) and hopes to create as much awareness about the spectrum as possible – as well as making ASA relatable and accessible to all interested parties and persons.

The Medical Journey’s Milestones

Amongst her numerous and illustrious milestones, one such is being part of an annual post-graduate workshop for Psychology Masters’ students. The annual workshop, in its third instalment last year (2020), focuses on the roles of the traditional healer and the medical doctor in managing mental health care within communities.

Another feather in her cap includes her involvement in the World Health Organisation (WHO) CST (Caregiver Skills Training)  Programme, which has been successfully implemented in more than 33 countries globally. Currently, the programme is poised to be piloted in Mafikeng, South Africa. Its implementation would arguably be the first such – within our shores and, create and serve as a template to be used in other provinces within the Republic of South Africa.

 

The Nurturing Adventurer

Ever the avid adventurer, in her spare time, Dr Tumelo Leeuw enjoys sports and a range of extreme out-door activities. She played basketball for more than 15 years and has been part of an expedition that successfully ascended Mount Kilimanjaro (2016). With time, she hopes to infuse her passion for sound health provision, travelling and helping communities.

She notes, “I would love to combine my passions for outdoor living, traveling and community development on the African continent. This would create increased awareness about disabilities in children so that the African child can have a better chance for survival and thrive!”

The journey’s Genesis

After High School (Mmabatho High), she studied medicine (MEDUNSA – 2004), and did her internship at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital. In 2007, she started honing her vocation and trade in Klerskdorp where she worked as a Medical Officer (Paediatrics Department). Dr Tumelo Leeuw then started her Registrar-Ship at Chris Hani Baragwanath in Johannesburg in 2009. During this period, she also completed a year’s Diploma in Paediatric Palliative Care. Since 2013, she has been based in Mafikeng where she remains in active practice in both: public and private sectors as a paediatrician. With special interest in Neurodevelopmental Disorders, she also completed her ADOS II training (with Prof Petrus De Vries), in 2016, Cape Town.

Arguably one of the Platinum Provinces brightest stars, Dr Tumelo Leeuw has scheduled plans to increase her private practice’s footprint within the province and republic. Her immutable dedication and passion for spreading wellness only stands to benefit all communities within which she serves.  

The facility caters for paediatric cases ranging from: 0-17 years and consists of a multi-disciplinary team which offers comprehensive services. Passionate about the consistent provision of the best, comprehensive and accessible medical modes that delivers a service that places the child (patient), and their parents/guardians at the core of all operations – Dr Tumelo Leeuw is an active advocate for Autism.

Viewing her role more as a vocation than “a job,” she is exceedingly devoted about meaningful community development projects. Consistently, she avails her time and expertise – in efforts of educating and enlightening communities on the most relevant and feasible healthcare interventions.

From being on community radio shows, to engaging audiences as an invited guest speaker at various events or on Social Media Platforms, Dr Tumelo Leeuw does it all, in the name of spreading sustained wellness for all communities – particularly, those she serves!!

Much of her work, as a General Paediatrician, is underpinned by her passion to see the most vulnerable community members (women and children), better informed and thriving within their communities. She manages a multi-disciplinary, holistic wellness private practice with aims of healing: the mind, body and soul.
